NEW CANAAN — Boredom will never find the sports-minded family that next occupies the 6.43-acre estate at 364 Laurel Road, where they will enjoy endless hours of athletic and recreational activities.
The compound’s numerous amenities will cater to a family’s every athletic, recreational, and even theatrical whims, whether their intent is strictly leisurely activity, the need of a good physical workout, or for professional pursuit. For example, the young girl for whom visions of sugarplums dance in her head, can take advantage of the ballet studio in the three-level sports barn, complete with mirrored walls, barre, water fountain, and steam room. The young child who aspires to a collegiate basketball scholarship can work on drills and skills in the barn’s basketball court, which has a regulation scoreboard.
Outside there is a heated in-ground swimming pool, a separate children’s pool and hot tub. In warm weather months the family can fish on the pond, which is stocked with trout. The main house features a special fishing and tackle room. During the winter they can figure skate or play a pick-up game of hockey on the same pond. At the water’s edge is an over-sized lean-to-like structure with a 20-foot stone fireplace and outdoor kitchen with a built-in barbecue.
The same level of detail that was given to the design of the award-winning sports barn is also found in the main house. Although it appears rather casual upon first glance and resembles a home that would be found nestled in the Rocky Mountains, this house has a real elegance about it with graceful architectural curves and angles and many special features. It has wide-planked black walnut and oak floors, exposed beams, reclaimed wood front door, custom alder wood cabinetry and an imported limestone sink in the gourmet kitchen, a long multi-tiered Peruvian wood deck/balcony accessed from several rooms, Tischler windows, and Burberry fabric wallcovering in the billiard room of the main house.
The main house, which was built in 1942 and remodeled in 2005, comprises 9,200-square-feet of living space in this nearly 20,000-square-foot compound. Inside, it contains five of the seven fireplaces. The other two are found in the second and third floor family rooms of the sports barn. There are six bedrooms in the main house, including the spacious first floor master suite. The sports barn has two bunk rooms that can accommodate a total of 16 people, as well as its own master suite. The guest cottage also has a bedroom as well as a full bath, kitchen and living room.
In the main house the living room has a cathedral ceiling, a long window seat, and a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace. The master suite has a copper and stone fireplace, dressing room, large walk-in closet, and his and hers baths. Hers features a limestone floor, jetted tub and window seat. His has a tumbled marble floor and green marble on the floor and backsplash of the shower and the vanity counter. The bedroom walls are covered in a silk and linen fabric.
A wing off the master has a sitting room and a large laundry room that doubles as a craft room with a utility room and two counter areas topped in granite. The gourmet kitchen features a stone floor, granite counters, large center island with refrigerated drawers, and high-end appliances including a Sub-Zero refrigerator hidden behind decorative paneling.
The kitchen in the barn is equally impressive, and so are its other features. The barn largely comprises reclaimed wood. It has a large mess hall with a ski lodge feel, an elevator, custom circular pine wood staircase that looks like a work of art and etched glass windows on the front entrance into the barn and into the dance studio, both sets of which are etched with nature scenes.
On the lower walk-out level of the cottage there are his and hers changing rooms and a sauna.
